Grief and Bereavement Support

Provided by Lumara Grief & Bereavement Care Society

Provides various therapy services to those who have been impacted by grief and loss.
Lumara supports children, youth, adults & families impacted by serious illness, grief & loss. The following services are provided:
  • Bereavement Support Groups (Circles of Strength): Year-round community-based groups. This program provides ongoing opportunities for those who are bereaved to connect, to share their experiences in a supportive environment and to learn strategies that can assist them in coping with their grief. All groups are facilitated by experienced therapists who trained volunteers often assist. While the program is family-centred in philosophy, each meeting includes a breakout time with separate talking circles and expressive arts therapy activities for adults, youth and children. Pre-registration is required, and all new applicants must participate in a phone interview with a group facilitator before attending their first session.
  • Camp Kerry: The program provides a variety of therapeutic and recreational experiences structured for success, including: peer group sharing circles, family activities, music & art therapy, nature hikes, adventure challenges, fishing, boating, sports & games, relaxation, campfires and a candlelight memory service.
  • Community Choirs (Synergy): Lumara’s Community Choirs are currently being offered online until further notice. Each week, they meet to sing together for a few hours. There are opportunities for sharing stories, for silence, and for contributing song ideas. Participants can expect these groups to be a haven for processing grief and other emotions.
  • Lumara’s Indigenous Wellness program: Supports self-identified Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Metis) individuals and families by providing holistic culture-based programming that is responsive to a multitude of complex needs. This program and organization integrate regular educational opportunities and healing rituals for individuals who support Indigenous communities affected by serious illness, grief, and bereavement.
  • Rose Family Bursary: This bursary is intended for a youth who has lost a parent or guardian. One bursary will be awarded yearly in June of $750 or more.
  • Lova, Cora Project: This initiative supplies care packages that offer comfort, hope and practical support to grieving families who have lost a young child between the ages of 1 and 13 years of age.
  • Youth Bereavement Services: Lumara provides support to bereaved youth ages 13 to 29 through individual and family meetings, peer mentorship, special outings, creative projects such as songwriting, recording, videography, and photography, as well as access to a private online social network. Additional supports include family retreats (Camp Kerry) and youth-only bereavement retreats. For more information about year-round programs for youth, please contact Lumara directly.
