Neuropsychiatry Program - BC Neuropsychiatry Program (BCNP)

Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health

Our target population includes adults with brain illnesses that cause serious disturbances in behavior, mood, intellectual abilities, or thinking processes, as well as those with psychiatric disorders that present as physical disturbances (somatoform disorders, somatic symptom disorder, somatization, conversion, and functional neurological disorders)
The program consists of two components:

1. Outpatient Clinic: Ambulatory assessment and treatment is provided to neuropsychiatric patients who experience mild to moderate distress or dysfunction and are stable within the community setting.Referrals for the outpatient clinic are ONLY accepted if referred by a treating psychiatrist.
2. Inpatient Program: This 10-bed unit provides acute diagnostic assessment and treatment for neuropsychiatric patients who have severe distress or dysfunction, are logistically unable to attend as an outpatient, have a complexity of presentation that requires a multidisciplinary team or repeated regular observations, require neurodiagnostic investigations such as lumbar puncture or treatments such as ECT that cannot be provided on an outpatient basis, or have failed all attempts at outpatient treatment. Length of stay averages 30-40 days with a maximum of 3 months.
3. 12 Inpatient secure unit at Hillside Centre Kamloops for patients who require a locked secure environment

At this time the outpatient clinic does not accept patients who have active medical/legal cases (ex. ICBC, Worksafe BC-unless referred by Worksafe Advisor) or referrals specifically for neuropsychology testing. We also do not accept Developmental Disorders, including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder ( refer to CLBC or Spectrum),

Does not see Patients under the age of 17 or over the age of 75. A referred patient MUST have a general treating psychiatrist actively following the patient in the community in order to qualify for our tertiary services.
